DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION [PMR]

The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation has been efficiently rendering its specialized services since 1982. The Department has been growing and is updated with the latest equipments used for patient care and treatment, besides maintaining pace with research activities.

Equipments / Modalities

Sophisticated equipments are used in this department as treatment modalities for various conditions and disorders like Bone and Joint disorders. Neurological disorders, congenital disabilities, poliomyelitis, post-polio residual disabilities and other musculoskeletal disorders. The modalities have been renewed and replaced by the latest computerized and sophisticated versions. The modalities used for therapeutic purposes are as under:-

  • Laser Therapy
  • CPM
  • Ultrasound Therapy
  • Microwave Diathermy
  • Tens
  • Inferential Therapies
  • Thermotherapy
  • Cryo – Therapies
  • Wax Therapy
  • Intermittent Compressions
  • Cervical and Lumber Traction
  • Advanced gymnasium equipment like tread mill, cycle exercisers, shoulder mobilization exercise and gait training equipment.

Patient Care Activities

The Department runs referral clinics for OPD patients twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday and on an average 250 patients attend these OPD days; besides Rheumatoid Clinic on Monday. LBA Clinic on Wednesday and Ortho/Prosthetic Clinic on Saturday are conducted. The Department has indoor bed capacity of 8 beds in Ward-7.

Academic Activities

Various teaching and training programs are conducted in the Department which is as under:-

  • Project work for B.Sc. Physiotherapy Students.
  • Six months internship training programme for B.Sc. Physiotherapy students(Six students are trained per year)
  • Training and teaching of resident doctors like Junior and Senior Residents and Postgraduate students from General Medicine on rotation basis.

Research Programmes

  • Efficacy, Toxicity and long term follow-up profile of methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Comparative Study of various DMARD’s in Rh Arthritis
  • Rehabilitation of Nerve injuries.
  • Developing Bladder control using IFT and PNF techniques in SCI patients
  • Rehabilitation of patients with failed back Surgery Syndrome, Neuro-Muscular orthotic devising for Peripheral Nerve Injuries
  • Conservative management of PIVD by Pelvic Traction and Physical Modalities.
