Radiation Oncology is a Super-speciality department which started way back in 1982 and has been at the forefront of giving comprehensive quality care to cancer patients. The department is involved in delivering Radiation therapy and Chemotherapy and has progressed gradually over the years, which can be gauged from the fact that seven patients were treated in 1982 with Radiotherapy and more than 2218 patients in the current year.

The department provides out-patient consultation to new and follow up cases six days a week. On an average 80 patients attend OPD daily. In addition, the Pain and Palliative Care Services for terminally ill patients on OPD basis is also functional and patients are also provided free morphine for alleviation of pain and home visits by staff within district Srinagar.

The department has indoor capacity of 17 beds which are utilized for patients, who need round the clock chemotherapy, or are suffering from treatment or disease related complications. In addition to the indoor facility, department runs Day-Care ward with the facility of 6 beds for administration of chemotherapy and other drugs every day.
The department treats on an average 150 patients with radiation therapy every day. The department is equipped with four treatment units. These include two tele-cobalt units viz Theratron 780-E and Bhabhatron-II, a Brachytherapy unit and Dual Energy Linear Accelerator (CLINAC DHX). HDR Brachytherapy Unit delivering Intraluminal and Intracavitory Brachytherapy has diversified the Radio-therapeutic facilities for the cancer patients. During the current year the department has installed and commissioned Dual Energy Linear Accelerator (LINAC). Patients are now benefitting with the use of this machine which is equipped with 3D-Conformal radiotherapy, IMRT and Electron Radiation facility. This equipment has enabled to provide the latest and quality based treatment to cancer patients. The department utilizes CT Simulator and C-ARM for radiation planning in order to deliver high precision radiotherapy.

After the up gradation of erstwhile Regional Cancer Centre (R.C.C) to the status of State Cancer Institute (S.C.I) by Ministry of Health, Government of India, the department hopes to further improve the quality of cancer care by acquisition of high end equipments like new state-of-the art Linear Accelerator with IGRT/IMRT, SRS, SRT and other forms of conformal Radiotherapy facility and 4-D CT simulator as well as construction of additional cancer wards. It’s worthwhile to mention that the department of Radiation Oncology has played a major role in getting the status of State Cancer Institute to SKIMS.

Recently Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) has been granted to SKIMS to improve upon the existing Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) which is affiliated to National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP), Bangalore, vide ICMR project with HOD Radiation Oncology as the Principal Investigator. The data pertaining to all cancer patients since 2011 has been transferred online to NCRP. For the first time data from our cancer centre has been published in the “Consolidated Report of Hospital Based Cancer Registries; 2012-2014”.

In addition to the patient care, the department is actively involved in imparting training to Postgraduate Students leading to the award of degree of M.D. Radiotherapy. The department is also running the B.Sc. & M.Sc. courses in Radiation Technology with HOD Radiation Oncology as the Convener of these courses. The department runs a hectic academic schedule for students comprising of seminars, journal club, bed side clinics, practicals in medical physics, in addition to regular theory classes. The Department is also involved in weekly Joint Tumor Board meetings with the various relevant departments.
