DEPARTMENT OF BLOOD TRANSFUSION & IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY

The department of BT and IH is one of the premier transfusion medicine departments of country involved and contributing towards optimal patient care both  therapeutic as well as diagnostic.

1). Donor Reception, Selection & Collection.
Donor selection is done as per American  association of blood bank guidelines. Rejection, deferral and call back registers are properly maintained .Professional donors are out rightly rejected. Rare blood group registry is being maintained. As per standard operating procedures blood collected is processed and fractionated as well to form various components like fresh frozen plasma, Cryoprecipitate, platelet rich plasma and platelet concentrate  which are being given to  sick and needy free of cost. Department is encouraging practice of giving irradiated blood to Haem-oncology patients and exchange transfusion for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

2). Cross Match Area
Stringent crossmatching practices so as to avoid transfusion reaction is applied in letter and spirit. Proper quality control is being maintained at all stages from reception to dispensing of blood and components .Laminar air flow is in pipeline.

3). Department provides facility of SDAP (Single donor apheresis) to patients admitted. This procedure is backbone of managing cancer patients.

4) The department has a full-fledged Rh clinic where in requisite investigations with titre valves are given to patients so as to have a healthy newborn.

5) Hemophilic patients regularly get fresh frozen plasma  from department free of cost and department has initiated processes of getting free factor VIII and factor IX on the analogy of arrangement rendered by government to two medical colleges of states at Srinagar and Jammu. Rendering this facility to SKIMS blood bank is more justified by the fact that for any complication or surgical procedure these patients are referred to SKIMS.

6) The department is carrying out teaching/training programs of undergraduate /post graduate in both medical and paramedical streams. The department is also offering the course of postgraduate diploma in BT and IH and process of MD has been initiated.

Projects:
  • The hemophilia incidence and prevalence in Kashmir
  • Prevalence of blood group pattern in Kashmir: an update.
  • Transfusion transmitted infection and occult HBV in community.
  • Genotyping of Rh negative mothers Minor Blood group patterns.
