The Department of Hospital Administration is managing the affairs of main SKIMS hospital. SKIMS Medical College Hospital & Maternity Hospital and postgraduate training in Hospital Administration and various in service training programmes in the areas of Hospital Administration and need based research in the relevant issued of management and para-medical / support personnel.

Academic Activities:-
The Department is running a three year postgraduate course MD in Hospital Administration recognized by MCI in each session two candidates are admitted 18 students have so far passed out and at present three students are undergoing training. The Department is also identified as a regional training centre for conducting and coordinating postgraduate diploma in Hospital and Health service Administration under the auspices of IGNOU. The Department routinely conducts training programmes / continuing Nursing Education Programme including AIDS, HIV awareness programme. Programs are also conducted for para-medicos and middle level managers of Hospital support services.

Research Activities:-
The Faculty, Sr. Residents and the Postgraduate of the Department are conducting research on several topics particularly in the field of Health Services Research. More than 250 papers (original review) have been published in standard International and National Medical Journals.

Other Activities:-
Faculty of the Department of Hospital Administration has been placed on various advisory Board of Hospital and Health Services Planning and delivery, curriculum development and inspection of health care facilities. The faculty of Department is routinely invited as external examiners, thesis evaluators, paper setters for various examinations conducted at State and national level among these include AIIMS, National Board of Examinations, Indira Gandhi National Open University etc.

Faculty of the Department is on Editorial Board and on the review board of peer reviewed journals pertaining to the specialty of Hospital and Health Services Administration.

Medical Education & Research

I have been supervisingresearch at postgraduate and post-doctoral level for two decades. I have been contributing to planning and policy-making (Health and Medical Education) at international, national and local levels for the last two decades.
I organized a number of International, National, Regional and Local Conferences, Symposia, Workshops, Seminars within India and abroad. I am also a Visiting Professor, Qassim, Al Rajhi Universities (Saudi Arabia).  I am External Examiner, AIIMS, and National Board of Examinations for the award of Diplomat National Board, New Delhi, Narayana Medical College, Nellore (Tamil Nadu). I am also Inspector/Assessor Medical Council of India for Accreditation.

I have been trying to develop confidence in the ability of academic medical institutions to produce healthcare professionals of high quality.  I have been on the panel of experts for the selection of medical teachers (professors etc), consultants, registrars and other healthcare professionals. I have made a significant contribution towards prevention & control of emerging infectious diseases. I introduced the concept of Continuous Quality Improvement and Clinical Audit in hospitals. I played a key role in introducing Quality Assurance Programmes in Health Services. Equally important is the role I played in developing ideas for strengthening District Heath System. I advocated the strategy for developing a sound referral system between primary, secondary and tertiary health care.

Health Care

I established a Disaster Management Programme besides establishing Departments of Accident & Emergency (with unique concept of Level System – first of its kind in the world) at SKIMS, which helped save lives and limbs, and disability prevention of thousands in Kashmir. I created awareness among people in general and health professionals in particular regarding disaster reduction, preparedness and mitigation. I conceived up-gradation plan for SKIMS and prepared the Preliminary Project Report [Advanced Trauma Centre, Multistory OPD, Accident & Emergency Services, 200-additional super-specialty ward block, Institute of Hepatatobiliary& Pancreatic Diseases] which was approved in principle for funding under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan (Rupees 700 crore).
Contribution to Medical Literature

I have authored more than a dozen text books (includingHandbook of Emergency Medicine (Valley Publishers: 1998), Textbook of Hospital & Health Services Administration (Oxford University Press New York 2000/2005), Planning, Organization & Management of Hospitals (JayPee Brothers Medical Publishers: 2003), The Future of Health (Paras Medical Publishers: 2004), Hospital Infection Control: Conceptual Framework. Academa Publishers. 2005 and Evidence Based Nursing Practice: 2010), have 400 Research publications in international medical journals and about 500 literary publications. I am on the Editorial Board of several international scientific journals besides being Editor_in_Chief of International Journal of Health Sciences.
