DEPARTMENT OF HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION

 

The Department of Hospital Administration is managing the affairs of main SKIMS hospital. SKIMS Medical College Hospital & Maternity Hospital and postgraduate training in Hospital Administration and various in service training programmes in the areas of Hospital Administration and need based research in the relevant issued of management and para-medical / support personnel.


Academic Activities:-

The Department is running a three year postgraduate course MD in Hospital Administration recognized by MCI in each session two candidates are admitted 18 students have so far passed out and at present three students are undergoing training. The Department is also identified as a regional training centre for conducting and coordinating postgraduate diploma in Hospital and Health service Administration under the auspices of IGNOU. The Department routinely conducts training programmes / continuing Nursing Education Programme including AIDS, HIV awareness programme. Programs are also conducted for para-medicos and middle level managers of Hospital support services.

Research Activities:-

The Faculty, Sr. Residents and the Postgraduate of the Department are conducting research on several topics particularly in the field of Health Services Research. More than 250 papers (original review) have been published in standard International and National Medical Journals.

Other Activities:-

Faculty of the Department of Hospital Administration has been placed on various advisory Board of Hospital and Health Services Planning and delivery, curriculum development and inspection of health care facilities. The faculty of Department is routinely invited as external examiners, thesis evaluators, paper setters for various examinations conducted at State and national level among these include AIIMS, National Board of Examinations, Indira Gandhi National Open University etc.


Faculty of the Department is on Editorial Board and on the review board of peer reviewed journals pertaining to the specialty of Hospital and Health Services Administration.

ADMINISTRATIVE CONTRIBUTION

  • Modernization and Up-gradation of Accident & Emergency Department at SKIMS (from 44 Beds to 100 Beds) during 2000. Introduced Level System in patient care (first of its kind in the world)
  • Created Disaster Management Ward at SKIMS
  • Prepared Project Report for SKIMS Up-gradation (300 crore rupees) approved by Prime Minister’s Office (duly endorsed by Planning Commission of India).
    • 200 Bedded Additional Ward Block
    • An independent Accident & Emergency Block
    • A multi-story Outpatient Complex
  • Prepared Project report for 160 bedded Advanced Trauma Centre at SKIMS, Centre of Excellence for Liver & Biliary Diseases, Centre of Excellence for Kidney and Urological Sciences
  • Created History by introducing Triple Shift Duty for SKIMS Staff after a gap of 20 years. Consequent upon reviving of this system, SKIMS saves about 33 percent manpower and more than 40 percent additional wages involved for engaging staff in different shifts to compensate the deficiencies in staff. This change at SKIMS has been appreciated by one and all as it has substantially improved the Nursing Care
  • Developed Mission Statement & Value Statement for SKIMS, 2009
  • Edited & Published Practice Guidelines (Hand Book) for Nurses 2010
  • Edited & Published Nursing College Magazine “Passion” (first time in the history of SKIMS)
  • Introduced and Implemented Local Area Network Program at SKIMS
  • Organized and Provided Prompt and Quality Care to Injured Patients (during 2010) thus saving precious lives
  • Undertook the challenge of Projectised Schemes for Advanced Equipment and Machinery for SKIMS Hospital (more than 11 crore rupees) including Technology: Oxygen Concentrator, Plasma Sterilizer, Incinerator, Quality Assurance Lab, Hi Tech Ambulances, Face Lift to Ward Block, Security Surveillance, Electronic Digital Display System, etc
  • Up-gradation and modernization of Emergency OT and Expansion of Main OT. Modular OT to be installed in Emergency OT (first of its kind in J&K)
  • Managed several Disasters, Emerging Infectious Diseases like Swine Flu, Bird Flu, SARS, AIDS, Cholera, etc
  • Established a 20-bed facility [Isolation Ward] for treating patients like H1N1 Novel (Swine), etc. We treated many cases that were referred to this hospital for treatment.
