Departmental Activities and Patient Care Services

Various sections of the department viz., bacteriology, mycobacteriology, serology, parasitology, mycology and virology cater to the diagnosis of various infectious diseases. Besides routine conventional methods, rapid diagnostic tests which include automated culture system and molecular techniques for certain infections are also being used for diagnostic purposes. The department also helps in the investigation and surveillance of various infectious outbreaks that occur in the Valley from time to time. Certain specialized tests like drug susceptibility testing for MTB and detection of ESBL producers is being performed in the department. At the state level this facility is exclusively available at SKIMS only. Efforts are on to standardize culture and antimicrobial susceptibility of H.pylori and antifungal susceptibility of fungi. At the molecular level genotypic detection of ESBL producers in gram negative bacteria and MRSA has been standardized.
Surveillance of different wards, critical care areas, operation theatres, kitchen, linen/laundry, CSSD, TSSU, etc. for hospital associated infections and outbreaks is being done on regular basis & measures for prevention, control and treatment of these infections undertaken. Besides, sterility testing & quality-check of IV fluids, syringes, etc. & disinfectants supplied to the Institute is done as a matter of routine on regular basis.
This department is performing bacteriological testing of potable water samples from SKIMS and PHE department on regular basis to ensure supply of safe drinking water to the general population and prevent the spread of water borne diseases in the community.
This department has well developed animal-house that caters to the scientific needs of various specialties.
Teaching/ Training programme of the Department: At the post graduate level department is involved in imparting training to MD and M. Sc Medical Lab Technology students. Besides this short term training is provided to B.Sc. and M.Sc. students from various institutes/universities. Faculty of the department is involved in teaching of MBBS students at SKIMS Medical College and the faculty is guide/ co guide to a number of MD/MS/MCH students of Microbiology, Medicine, Surgery, etc not only at SKIMS but also at other universities of the state.
Five MD / M.Sc. students are pursuing their research projects in the department at present. Seminars, journal clubs and discussions are conducted in the department on regular basis.
