Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Srinagar is pleased to inform the public that the collaborative services between the Department of Cancer Surgery SKIMS and Directorate of Health Services Kashmir in which cancer patients were operated upon by the experts from Cancer Surgery Department of SKIMS in various District Hospitals will be restarted. Earlier under this project, a large number of cancer patients were operated upon in peripheral hospitals in Kashmir Division by the experts from same Department. However due to some unavoidable reasons, these services got interrupted for some time. This project was started in 2014 after great efforts of Prof. Showkat Ali Zargar (Ex-Director SKIMS), Dr. Saleem-u-Rehman (Director Health Services Kashmir) and Dr. Altaf Gauhar Haji (HOD, Department of Cancer Surgery SKIMS).

However in a recent meeting held between the experts of Surgical Oncology SKIMS (Dr. Altaf Gauhar Haji, Dr. Sheikh Zahoor, Dr. Azhar Jan Batoo and Dr. Mir Ab. Wahid) and Director Health Services Kashmir, it was jointly decided that these services will be restored with wider coverage in District Hospitals of Handwara, Baramulla, Anantnag, Bandipora, SDH Sogam and JLNM Hospital Srinagar.

Under this project, the experts from Surgical Oncology SKIMS will operate upon cancer patients at DH Handwara from Monday (July 04 of 2016). The goals of this project are to sensitize and train the health professionals in peripheries about early detection and treatment of cancer and co-ordinate their treatment so that they get standard care at their doorsteps.

Further it is worth mentioning that the experts from the Department of Surgical Oncology SKIMS have taken a historical initiative to take time out of their busy schedule to treat these patients at their doorsteps.
