Director SKIMS Chairs Interaction Session with Junior Resident Doctors

Srinagar, February 19, 2025 – In a significant step towards enhancing the patient care services, skills and capabilities of the newly appointed Junior Resident (JR) doctors, the Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Dr. Mohd Ashraf Ganie, chaired an enlightening interaction session with the Junior Residents at the SKIMS Board Room. This session aimed to provide these young medical professionals with essential insights and guidance for their clinical careers, focusing on critical areas such as patient care ethics, communication skills, empathy, and professional enthusiasm.
Upon welcoming the Junior Resident doctors, Director & EOSG, Dr. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie expressed that the main objective of SKIMS is to offer comprehensive training to these future healthcare leaders. He emphasized the importance of equipping them with the requisite skills and knowledge to excel in their respective specialties. Prof. Ganie mentioned that our goal is not only to provide you with the technical know-how but also to instill the necessary ethics and values that will allow you to offer the best possible care to our patients. He also stressed that enthusiasm, dedication, and responsibility should be at the heart of their practice. Encouraging them to stay passionate about their work, the Director emphasized the responsibility they carry as caregivers and decision-makers along with the senior consultants in the healthcare system.
Dr. Shariq Masoodi, Dean of Medical Faculty, SKIMS, held a motivational interaction with the Junior Residents. Dr. Masoodi shared powerful examples of renowned clinicians who have made substantial contributions to the field of medicine, highlighting how their dedication, hard work, and perseverance led to remarkable accomplishments. He reminded the Junior Residents that while they are at the start of their careers, they are part of a long legacy of healthcare professionals who have impacted lives profoundly. Dr. Masoodi emphasized the importance of learning from these role models and internalizing their commitment to ethical patient care and excellence.
Dr. Fazal Q Parry, a renowned surgeon at SKIMS, also interacted with the Junior Residents. He spoke on the importance of continuous self-improvement in the medical profession. Dr. Fazal encouraged the doctors to always strive for betterment, emphasizing that their growth in knowledge and clinical skills would directly impact their future as successful clinicians. He assured them that SKIMS would provide all the necessary resources and support to facilitate their professional development.
Dr. Ganie and other senior members of SKIMS congratulated the Junior Resident doctors on successfully qualifying the entrance examination. This entrance exam, conducted for the first time, was designed to ensure transparency and merit-based selection, marking a significant achievement for SKIMS in maintaining high standards in recruitment. During the session, the Junior Residents raised some minor concerns, including issues related to accommodation, the availability of minor medical equipments etc. Recognizing the importance of addressing these matters promptly, Dr. Ganie assured the Junior Residents that SKIMS is committed to providing them with the necessary support to resolve these challenges. He emphasized that the concerns would be addressed promptly, and efforts would be made to address them in a timely and effective manner.
Additionally, it was decided that an orientation program will be organized in the first week of March 2025. The orientation will serve as a vital platform for the Junior Residents to gain a deeper understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and the expectations that come with their position. The program will also allow them to become better acquainted with the culture and operational environment at SKIMS.
The Director also reminded all Junior Residents about the importance of maintaining professionalism in their day-to-day activities. He strongly advised them to adhere to a proper dress code, wear their nameplates at all times, and ensure that stamps are applied to patient cards for clear identification and accountability. These actions, he stressed, are essential in maintaining the high standards of patient care and the integrity of SKIMS as a reputable healthcare institution.
In closing, all Junior Residents were directed to approach their work with honesty, integrity, and dedication. All members expressed their confidence that the Junior Residents would make invaluable contributions to the success and reputation of SKIMS. Dr. Ganie quoted that "Your commitment to excellence in patient care will not only impact your careers but will also uphold the trust and respect that SKIMS has earned over the years," urging the doctors to continue to uphold the values of compassion, professionalism, and service to the community.
