DEPARTMENT OF GASTROENTEROLOGY


DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES & PATIENT CARE SERVICES

The Department of Gastroenterology has been providing tertiary care as superspeciality to the patients for the last two decades.  The department is holding 10 OPDs and a pediatric clinic on weekly basis.  The department gives round the clock coverage to the emergency area of the Institute.    As a routine, the department is performing highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP) etc. In view of the sufficient and competent man power, modernized therapeutic facilities and excellent performance, the department stands amongst the renowned Gastroenterology departments in the country.

Recently the department has been equipped with Capsule Endoscopy System, Hydrogen Breath Test Analyzer and 24 hour Ambulatory pH Metery and Manometery System.  With the availability of these facilities, patients are not now referred outside the state for these investigations.

In addition to routine activity the specialty has organized awareness/ screening camps with various Government AND Non-Government Organizations in particular with Cancer Society of Kashmir, HPVT (Help Poor Voluntary Trust) and Directorate of Health Services. Recently the department organized awareness cum screening camp for Hepatitis B and C viruses in Ladakh region and among the hospital staff members.  In the era of Information Technology the department as a superspeciality in the state has discussed patients of interest/ diagnostic dilemma on-line with specialists in other parts of the country and provided guidance regarding patient care to health care authorities in far flung areas of the state.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The department being a Postgraduate/Postdoctoral Department runs MD/DM courses in the department and is having a well set teaching schedule. Treatment planning sessions, journal clubs, seminars bedside teaching session and joint clinics with other departments like Pathology, Oncology and Radiology are being regularly conducted by the department. The Postgraduate and Postdoctoral students are being provided training and education in various aspects of the specialty with full emphasis on recent developments and modern techniques in the field. Since the year 2001 the department of Gastroenterology has enrolled 17 DM candidates for undergoing training in Gastroenterology out of which 11 candidates have already completed the course.  Two more candidates are at the verge of completion.  The department is also involved in MD Medicine and there are presently 8 qualified guides.  The students are working on different projects including comparative evaluation and analysis of various gastrointestinal diseases.  On an average 2 DM and 6 MD students are successfully completing their training annually and awarded degrees.
