DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is one of the oldest, largest and vital departments of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). Apart from providing evidence based, quality patient care, it serves as a Premier Referral Centre for high risk and complicated obstetric and gynaecological patients. The Department simultaneously runs a comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training programme, with regular theory classes, seminars, journal clubs and practical bedside training, including day-care and surgical procedure training.

Ever since its expansion in December 2021, all these activities have drastically increased. There is a foot fall of around 69,000 patients in the OPD annually; 7362 admissions in the Wards and approximately 4448 deliveries annually. Over 200 minor procedures and 499 major gynaecological procedures, including hysterectomy, laparoscopic procedures, hysteroscopic procedures and other gynaecological procedures like laparotomy are done in this high patient volume Department. 50,572 laboratory investigations; 37,046 Ultrasounds and 6402 ECGs have been done in the past year itself.

The Department also runs speciality clinics like infertility, uro-gynecology, menopause, adolescent clinics, and cancer screening. We also partake in inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary academics and conduct undergraduate and postgraduate exams. We are also known for our collaboration with universities outside the J&K UT where we present scientific research, attend conferences and exchange, knowledge and expertise and collaborate in the formulation of good practice guidelines for our clinics.
