ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of General Surgery & Minimal Invasive Surgery SKIMS has continued its pivotal role in the functioning of the Institute. In all the three areas viz. Patient services, Teaching and Research, the department has performed up to the standard and showed progress in all areas.

ELECTIVE SURGICAL WORK

Besides the routine surgical procedures, the department is performing lot of technically advanced surgical procedures. Laparoscopic procedures are being performed with high definition 3-Chip Camera Laparoscope. Besides high risk Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies, TEP and IPOM, Diagnostics, Intra peritoneal chemotherapy, Lap. Ovarian Cystectomies, Laparoscopic Hydatid Cystectomy and Laparoscopic colorectal procedures and laparoscopic adrenalectomies are being done. In GI (gastrointestinal surgery) surgery in addition to routine gastric  hepatob-liary and colorectal surgical procedures, advancements have been achieved like gastric interposition after Gastrectomy, total Gastrectomy followed by formation of jejunal pouch and D2-gastrectomies; Neostomach pouch, advanced biliary procedures , access loops and total mesorectal excision, stapled low anterior resection (LAR), total proctocolectomy and IPAA (Ileal pouch anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis and FAP), MIPH (Minimal invasive) procto haemorrhoidectomy (MIPH). Neorectum in the form of Colonic-J pouches and coloplasties in CA Rectum patients is also being done. Among endocrine surgery, in addition to thyroidectomies, block neck dissections, parathyroidectomies and adrenal surgeries are also being performed very successfully.

We are in the forefront in trauma management.

ACADEMICS

The intake capacity for postgraduate courses for the department is 19 per year. Presently 57 postgraduate students are undergoing postgraduate training in the Department of General Surgery.
