Press Release : Observance of NCD Fortnight by the Department of Community Medicine SKIMS
Srinagar 15th Nov. 2023: The Department of Community Medicine SKIMS actively participated in the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Fortnight, demonstrating a commitment to public health and community well-being. This event, observed from 28 Oct 2023 to 14th Nov 2023, aimed to raise awareness about the growing prevalence of NCDs and promote preventive measures within the local community. The various activities conducted included School Outreach Program where the department conducted informative sessions at local schools, including Govt. Boys Hr. Secondary School, Zadibal, emphasizing key NCDs like Hypertension, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, Stroke, and Cancer. Interactive discussions and Q&A sessions engaged students and teachers in understanding preventive strategies. The various programs were also conducted in Colleges with focus on awareness sessions covered various NCDs, and handouts were distributed for extended learning especially regarding World Cancer Day during the same fortnight.The specialised session was tailored for nursing students and faculty at Nursing College SKIMS aligning with the goal of empowering future healthcare professionals. Also ASHA workers and the Multiskilled Health Professionals organized an awareness cum screening event in Block Hajin. The community was sensitized about NCDs, and screenings for hypertension and blood sugar were conducted. The NCD Fortnight culminated with a comprehensive screening and awareness program on World Diabetes Day held at Administrative Enclave, Sumbal. The event offered free screenings for blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and BMI assessments. Interactive educational sessions, counselling services, and community engagement activities contributed to the success of the program. The observance of NCD Fortnight resulted in increased awareness about NCDs and their preventive measures, Early detection of new cases through community screenings, empowerment of students, faculty, and healthcare professionals with knowledge on NCDs. While giving details of various activities conducted HOD, Community Medicine SKIMS said that the Department of Community Medicine SKIMS remains committed to regular awareness and screening programs.She added that collaborations with community leaders will be explored to enhance the reach and effectiveness of NCD-related activities.This initiative aligns with SKIMS's ongoing dedication to community health and underscores the importance of proactive measures in tackling the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases.
