DEPARTMENT OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY

Radiation Oncology is a Super-Specialty Department catering both postgraduate Medical Education leading to the award of Degree of M.D. (Radiotherapy) and the patient care services at tertiary care level as far as the management of cancer is concerned. Till date 28 candidates have completed their degrees (MD Radiotherapy) who are working in various parts of the country and abroad. The Department in collaboration with the Departments of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, and Medical Physics & Bioengineering also run a B.Sc. & M.Sc. Course in Radiation sciences.

This department is having Theratron 780-e (Cobalt Unit) imported from Canada, which caters the heavy rush of patient attending this department for treatment of various malingnancies. About 95 patients receive the treatment per day on Theratron 780-E and in order to coupe up the heavy rush of patients suffering from various malignant diseases, the department runs two shifts from 8 AM to 2 PM and 2PM to 8PM and even upto 10 PM depending upon the rush of patients, for treatment execution. We have been experiencing a tremendous increase in the number of new cancer patients attending this department.

This Institute has been granted the status of regional cancer center and as such a state of art CT simulator has already been commissioned which will go, in long way, to facilitate high quality and precision radiation therapy.

Order has been placed for procurement of HDR Brachytherapy and a new Cobalt Unit and these are expected to be commissioned very soon.
Tenders have also been floated for procurement of Dual Energy Linear Accelerator with 3D and IMRT facilities.

We also run Joint Tumor Clinic with Department of Medical Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Pathology each a week.
