DEPARTMENT OF IMMUNOLOGY & MOLECULAR MEDICINE FACULTY : Dr. Roohi Rasool, Professor/Head Departmental Activities & Patient Care Services This department has been established as a super specialty discipline in 1982. General activities of this department include routine as well as advanced laboratory services to the patients. The department takes pride in having well established immunodiagnostic, Radioimmunoassay and Molecular diagnostic laboratories. It is the only BRITT certified radio immune assay laboratory in the state of J&K. Estimation of thyroid, fertility, metabolic and other hormones and metabolites by RIA is a matter of routine in the department. Investigations like detection and typing of Myelomas, autoimmune disorders, and cancer markers, HLA Typing and Cross match testing for renal transplant patients and HLA B27/DR-2/4 detection for ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases are also provided on routine basis. Molecular diagnostic facilities for diagnosis of Mycobacterium tubercular infection has become a matter of routine in this department. Detection of JAK-2 mutations in haemopoitic disorders is now carried out routinely. Tests for various allergic disorders like SPT, patch testing, autologous serum tests, drug sensitivity & desensitization and Immunotherapy to allergic patients are now done routinely. Clinical services in the form of allergy clinic are run routinely. ICTC (Integrated Counseling & Testing Centre) for HIV is an integral part of the department. Flowcytometry related tests for HIV positive patients is a matter of routine. The department also caters to molecular diagnosis, evaluation and prenatal counseling of genetically inherited diseases. Genetic analysis of dystrophin gene in Duchene Muscular Dystrophy patients and affected families is being done. Karyotyping is now done on a routine basis. Academic activities The department is actively involved in various academic activities of the institute. The department has a full time M.Sc. MLT & Ph.D programme in Immunology & Molecular Medicine. Many DM/MD/MS students are pursuing their research projects in the department at present.
